introduction

To increase the understanding of biological processes in the Southern Ocean, the concentrations of numerous taxonomic marker pigments were measured during the U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) Antarctic Environment and Southern Ocean Process Study (AESOPS) Survey II cruise in early 1998.  Water samples were collected from the sea surface over a 3o x 2o area near 170oW, 60oS.  Pigment concentrations were then measured for each sample using high-pressure liquid chromotography (HPLC).

This site presents the resulting pigment maps for this region.  The pigment data may be downloaded for use in scientific research after obtaining permission.

This study is part of an ongoing research effort in the Southern Ocean by the Oregon State University (O.S.U.) Remote Sensing Ocean Optics (ORSOO) group.
