Each mooring is a bottom-tethered mooring extending from the sea floor to 50 m below the sea surface.  A schematic of the mooring design is shown to the right.  The data presented in this study are from the OEI current meter and the SeaBird MicroCAT which are located at nominal depths of 70 m and 72 m respectively.  Note that the mooring design allows vertical and horizontal movement of the sensors with variations in currents.

Twelve such moorings were deployed in the Southern Ocean in a grid formation centered at (60.5^oS, 170^oW).  Each of the moorings were placed approximately 30 km apart.  A brief description of the deployment dates, water depths and other general information about each individual mooring can be found using the interactive mooring map.

Four month-long cruises in the vicinity of the moorings provided ancillary data (rr-kiwi_6, rr-kiwi_7, rr-kiwi_8 and rr-kiwi_9).
