instrument

The instrument used was a tethered spectral radiometer buoy (TSRB-II) (S/N 003) from Satlantic, Inc.   This instrument measures:

  • downwelling irradiance just above the sea surface at seven visible wavebands
    (412, 443, 489, 555, 670, 684 and 700 nm)
  • upwelling radiance just below the sea surface at the same wavebands, and
  • sea surface temperature.

The wavebands have bandpasses of approximately 10 nm.  Measurements are made at a frequency of 6 Hz.  This instrument is calibrated by Satlantic, Inc.

The TSRB was hand-deployed from the stern of the ship, and allowed to sit at the sea surface approximately 10 m away from the ship.
