The
deployment procedures used for the TSRB is designed to follow the ocean optics protocols
for SeaWiFS calibration and validation (J.L. Mueller and R.W. Austin, SeaWiFS
Technical
Report Series, V25, Feb 1995). The deployment procedure is outlined below:
- casts are made
over a range of solar zenith angles (between 09:00 and 12:00 PST).
- to start the deployment, the
sensors are first checked for fouling and cleaned if necessary.
- the instrument is then lowered
into the surface of the water from the stern of the ship.
- the instrument is then allowed to
float away from the ship (to the rear), tethered by the data cable, to a distance of about
30 m.
- the instrument is left to make
measurements for up to several hours.
- the instrument is then retrieved,
rinsed with fresh water and allowed to dry.
- occasional dark
measurements are made with the sensors covered and the instrument in the
shade.
